📌 Key facts: MathScan does not store your photos. Images you send are forwarded directly to OpenAI for processing and are subject to OpenAI's Privacy Policy. We do not sell your personal data.

1. Who we are

MathScan ("App", "we", "our") is a mobile application available on iOS that helps users solve mathematical problems using artificial intelligence. The operator of the App is the individual or entity listed in the App Store listing.

2. Data we collect

2.1 Data you provide

  • Math questions (text): Text you type into the chat is sent to OpenAI's API to generate a solution. It is not persistently stored on our servers beyond the current session.
  • Photos / images: Images you attach are immediately forwarded to OpenAI for processing and are not stored on MathScan servers. OpenAI may retain them temporarily as governed by their data retention policy.
  • Language preference: Stored locally on your device only (AsyncStorage).

2.2 Data we collect automatically

  • Device ID: A randomly generated UUID stored on your device. Used to identify your wallet (credit balance) anonymously. It is not linked to your Apple ID, email, or any personal identifier.
  • Credit balance & transaction records: Purchase history (product ID, timestamp, token amount) is stored on our server to maintain your wallet. No payment card data is stored — all payments are handled by Apple In-App Purchase.

2.3 Data we do NOT collect

  • Name, email address, phone number
  • Apple ID or any Account credentials
  • Location data
  • Photos (not stored on our servers — see Section 2.1)
  • Contacts or any other device data

3. How we use your data

  • To provide the core service: process your math questions and return AI-generated solutions.
  • To manage your in-app credit balance and verify In-App Purchases.
  • To improve app performance and diagnose technical issues (anonymised device ID only).

We do not use your data for advertising, profiling, or sell it to third parties.

4. Third-party services

OpenAI

Your math questions and any attached images are processed by OpenAI, LP. When you send a message, the content is transmitted to OpenAI's API. OpenAI processes it under their Privacy Policy. Your images are not stored by MathScan — they are only passed through to OpenAI.

Apple In-App Purchase

All payments are handled exclusively by Apple. We receive only a confirmation token and the product ID. No payment card details are ever transmitted to or stored by MathScan.

Expo / React Native

The App is built with Expo. Expo may collect limited anonymous diagnostic data. See Expo Privacy Policy.

5. Data retention

Your anonymous device ID and credit balance are retained for as long as you use the App. You can request deletion at any time by contacting support@mathscan.app. We will delete your record within 30 days.

Chat history is stored only locally on your device. Clearing the app's storage or uninstalling the App removes it permanently.

6. Data security

All communication between the App and our servers uses HTTPS/TLS encryption. Our backend servers are hosted in the EU / ISO-27001-certified infrastructure. We implement access controls and regular security reviews.

7. Children's privacy

MathScan is rated 4+ on the App Store and may be used by children with parental supervision. We do not knowingly collect personally identifiable information from children under 13. If you believe a child has submitted personal data, contact us immediately at support@mathscan.app.

8. Your rights (GDPR / CCPA)

You have the right to:

  • Access the data we hold about you (essentially your anonymous device ID and purchase history).
  • Request deletion of your data.
  • Object to or restrict processing.
  • Data portability.

9. International transfers

Our servers are located in the European Union. When your text or images are sent to OpenAI, they may be processed on servers in the United States. OpenAI participates in the EU–U.S. Data Privacy Framework.

10. Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy. The updated version will be posted at mathscan.app/privacy with a revised "Last updated" date. Continued use of the App after changes constitutes acceptance.
